The impact of carbohydrate-containing food on blood sugar levels

The term glycemic index (GI) was developed by Jenkins et al. (1981) in relation with the human diet, but it is assumed that this principle is also applicable to the diet of dogs. The glycemic index describes the influence of carbohydrate-containing food on blood sugar levels. The higher the value, the higher the blood sugar level rises.

Various starch sources can have different effects on the blood sugar level; however, the absolute starch content is not the factor. For instance, rice has a much higher glycemic index compared to corn.

The carbohydrate sources used for our Genesis Pure Canada products are characterized by a low to moderate glycemic index. We selected unique ingredients such as plantain, lentils and chickpeas as they have a low GI and are perfectly complemented by potatoes.

Since our recipes are always based on a high proportion of animal protein, the carbohydrate content is generally low as a matter of principle. The consumption of food with a low GI may help to prevent obesity.

Our recipes focus on the diet of a dog in their natural environment so we only include a small amount of carbohydrates as this helps to keep their GI low and works in conjunction with proper feeding levels and exercise to prevent obesity.
